Post Which video formats are supported? --

I visited a site that posted videos as discrete links from the page. They're in .avi format, and my Chromebook downloads them instead of playing them when I click the link.

The OS doesn't appear to understand what the files are either. I can open the file manager (with Ctrl+M), select the avi video file, and the detail pane on the left does not present the option to play the file. (Doesn't present much, really.)

In this instance, the Chrome OS FAQ isn't very helpful. Does anyone know which video codecs are supported by Chrome OS?

I don't know how many times I have said this in this forum...

AVI files are not supported by ChromeOS. ChromeOS is a web-oriented browser, as such, it doesn't work with legacy codecs.

H264 seems to be the best option for playing back video...

Some MP4 formats work, and most MOV formats will work as well. AVI is a container file and the contents can be encoded differently - divx, xvid, avi... and ChromeOS doesn't support anything that is not web-oriented (like MOV, MP4, and H264 video).

Sorry; I tried the search bar before asking, but didn't get any specific references to avi's.
